Thousands Expected For Midwest Tomato Fight
HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) -- Ready, aim -- fire your tomato!
That could be the cry Sunday at the Midwest Tomato Fest at the Afton Alps Recreational Area. Thousands of people are expected to hurl soft tomatoes at each other in what's billed as the area's first tomato fight.
Organizers say the fest was inspired by La Tomatina, an annual food fight in Spain.
Kevin Walker, one of the organizers, tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press that part of the festival's proceeds will go to the Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul.
While things will get messy, trucks with showers and blowers will allow participants to clean up.
The fest runs from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the hourlong tomato fight starting at 2:30 p.m.
