These Popular Fair Foods Now Have Gluten-Free Options

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- With deep fried battered foods galore, you'd think the state fair would be a nightmare for people who can't have gluten.

"You walk through those gates, and you're smelling the Pronto Pups and the mini donuts and the cheese curds, and you know you can't have those. You have to walk right on by," said Julie Salato, the director of the Celiac Center of Minnesota.

But not anymore.

Now, the gluten-free options are endless. There are more than 40 vendors that carry gluten-free options at the fair.

"For those of us that have to eat gluten free, those of us with celiac or gluten intolerance, it opens up a whole new horizon for us," Salato said.

If you need your corn dog fix, you can't beat the new gluten-free beer battered brat at Sonny's.

"It's been selling super well," said a booth worker. "It's a great seller, people love it, especially all the gluten-free people."

If you're craving something sweet, the Salty Tart is serving up gluten-free macaroons inside the new West End market. They're approved by gluten and gluten-free eaters alike.

And to wash it all down, you can stop by Cafe Caribe for their Lakefront New Grist Gluten Free Beer.

"Of course there are always the naturally gluten-free foods like pork chop on a stick or the popular roasted corn, so there are options for everyone here at the fair," Salato said.
