Teen Sentenced To 25 Years In Fatal Robbery Attempt
SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — A Douglas County judge went beyond recommendations in a plea agreement in sentencing a teen to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting a man during a robbery attempt.
Judge George Glonek also gave 18-year-old Chance Andrews 10 years of supervision during sentencing in a packed courtroom Thursday. A local TV station reports nearly 100 people crowded into the courtroom.
Andrews earlier pleaded guilty to felony murder in the death of 20-year-old Garth Velin last September at the victim's Superior home. The prosecution and defense recommended 16½ years in prison as part of the plea agreement.
A criminal complaint says Andrews and four others traveled from Duluth, Minnesota to Superior to rob Velin. The four others also face charges in Velin's death, including one defendant who has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing.
