Tall Ships Festival Underway In Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO/AP) -- The 2013 Tall Ships Festival is underway in Duluth. Nine tall ships sailed into Duluth harbor on Tuesday to open the four-day festival.
Two U.S. Coast Guard cutters led the ships in. Visitors said they were amazed by the complexity of operating the historic re-creations.
The Pride of Baltimore II was the first tall ship to go under the Aerial Lift Bridge, firing three shots from its cannon within the channel.
The city of Duluth expects big crowds for the festival. About 250,000 tourists are expected to travel to Duluth for the event.
The festival is expected to generate as much as $15 million for the Duluth economy. More than 25 tall ships are taking part in a tour of 22 Great Lakes ports.
