Suspect In Minn. Somalis Case To Stay In Custody
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A former Minneapolis man accused of recruiting fighters for al-Shabab in Somalia will stay in custody for at least another two weeks.
A federal judge in Minneapolis on Monday continued the proceeding against Mohamud Said Omar to give the defense more time to prepare arguments for why he should be released. Judge Michael Davis set Omar's next hearing for Aug. 26.
Omar was charged in 2009 with counts including providing material support to terrorists. Prosecutors have said he traveled to Somalia himself and provided money to buy assault rifles.
It was Omar's first Minnesota court appearance since he was extradited from the Netherlands. His attorney, Matt Forsgren, declined to comment on the charges afterward.
Two of his brothers who attended the hearing said afterward their brother is not a terrorist.
