Suspect In Fatal Hit-&-Run Arrested After High-Speed Chase
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One person is dead and a Duluth man is in custody after a hit-and-run crash at the Culkin Rest Area in Mahtowa, Minn. Wednesday.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, they were notified at 5:30 p.m. of the fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. The suspect vehicle was described as a blue Ford pickup truck.
A short time later, a vehicle matching the description was observed on northbound Interstate 35 near Highway 210 traveling at speeds of over 90 mph. When the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle by activating his lights and siren, the driver did not comply and a high-speed pursuit ensued.
In attempt to stop the suspect, authorities used stop-sticks and attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, all of which were unsuccessful.
Eventually, the 25-mile pursuit ended when a trooper successfully used a PIT maneuver and the suspect vehicle spun off the road into a ditch near the intersection of Stebner Road and Arrowhead Road. Sherber was uninjured and was arrested without incident, according to the State Patrol.
Now, the State Patrol is investigating the hit-and-run crash and the high-speed pursuit. The findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the Carlton County Attorney for review.
