Surplus Pleases DFL, But Different Priorities Show
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Democrats who control Minnesota's House and Senate agree a $1.2 billion surplus is likely to make for an easier legislative session, but there's not agreement yet on how much to spend, save or rebate to taxpayers.
House Speaker Paul Thissen says Friday he wants to move quickly on more than $500 million in tax relief. The bill already cleared a House committee and Thissen says he wants to get it to Gov. Mark Dayton by mid-March, as the governor requested.
But Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk says it might not go that fast. He also says while the bigger surplus makes tax relief easier, that he wants to make sure some money is left over for a cushier state reserve fund in anticipation of future economic dips.
