'U' Researchers: Lake Superior Surface Temps Warming
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Scientists are concerned about the warmer temperatures of Lake Superior, but the fishing and shipping industries say it helps them.
The average surface water temperature for the entire lake hit 68.5 degrees in August.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota Duluth say summer temperatures in the lake have increased by 5 degrees over the past 30 years.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says warmer surface water could also result in more fish, especially salmon and brook trout.
Less ice cover could also benefit the shipping industry.
