Student Protest Proposed Cuts To Pell Grant Program
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Thousands of Minnesota college students are upset over proposed cuts to the Pell Grant program. And they want lawmakers to know about it.
Students delivered a petition at the State Capitol Monday morning.
They oppose a proposal in the U.S. House to cut the program by more than $4 billion.
Michael Flannery says his education would not be possible without the help.
"I am an example of how the Pell Grant aides in student success. I graduated with a high GPA, a membership in the International Honor Society and experience in student leadership," he said. "Without help from the Pell, those accomplishments would have taken a back seat to simply trying to work or borrow enough money to pay for school."
Most Pell Grants are given to families earning less than $20,000 a year.
Nearly 140,000 college students rely on Pell grants in Minnesota.
