Stranded Canoeists Rescued On St. Croix River
TOWN OF BLAINE, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities have rescued a group of young female canoeists who became stranded on the banks of the St. Croix River in northwestern Wisconsin.
The 14 teenagers and young adults and their two counselors were from the YMCA Camp St. Croix in Hudson. Authorities say the group got stranded after some of their canoes were swamped by high water.
The Burnett County sheriff's office got a call for help around 8:45 p.m. Thursday. The Duluth News Tribune reports a hovercraft and boats were used to rescue the campers. The rescue wasn't completed until early Friday.
Everyone in the group was accounted for and returned to Camp St. Croix. One canoeist was treated for apparent exposure.
The canoeists were rescued from a remote wilderness accessible only by the river.
