Stranded Campers Waiting Out Floodwaters In Aitkin County
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Among those waiting for floodwaters to drop are seven stranded campers.
State emergency officials say two groups of campers are cut-off by floodwaters in Savanna Portage State Park in Aitkin County. At this point, there is no urgency to rescue the campers.
"They've been in contact with park staff. They have food (and) supplies, there are no medical issues," said Bruce Gordon, spokesman for the Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. "They'll just have to wait out the water."
It's unclear how long it will be before the water recedes enough for the campers to get out of the park. Gordon says if an emergency arises, crews will go get the campers.
"(There's a) possibility of an airboat or some other resource being able to reach them if it does become an emergency situation," Gordon said.
Savanna Portage is one of three state parks that have been closed as the result of flooding. Jay Cooke State Park and the state campground at Moose Lake are also closed until further notice.
