I-90 In Minn. Reopens, Many Roads Still Bad
ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation has re-opened Interstate 90 from Albert Lea to the South Dakota border after a winter storm forced its closure for more than 24 hours.
MnDOT announced that the freeway opened again at 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The agency had closed it at about 11 a.m. Saturday due to extremely low visibility caused by blowing snow.
MnDOT says most roads in the state are open again Sunday afternoon but many are still snow-compacted and icy and numerous highways are down to a single lane. Crews are out trying to make highways more passable, but subzero temperatures are restricting the use of chemicals normally used to clear up roads.
The agency says some ice-covered roads may not be safe until the middle of the week, when temperatures are forecast to finally rise a little bit. MnDOT says people who need to travel should use extra caution.
