Stillwater Begins Sandbagging

STILLWATER, Minn. (WCCO) -- With spring flooding closing in, the City of Stillwater is looking for volunteers to help fill sandbags.
Mayor Ken Harycki said they've been planning since December for major flooding along the St. Croix River, and this year they're going to need plenty of help.
"We will be starting sandbag operations today at 10 o'clock in the morning. We anticipate we will be continuing with those operations for the next two weeks or so. We have 120,000 sandbags to fill, so there's quite a lot of work to be done," explained Harycki.

Harycki suggests all volunteers visit the city's website for instructions. He said they want to be very careful that they don't have too many volunteers show up on one day and not have anything for them to do.
According to Harycki, Stillwater is no stranger to flooding.
"We seem to have a 50- or 100-year flood every couple years, unfortunately. So they city staff has quite a bit of experience in building protective levies, to protect the downtown," said Harycki. "We've never had a major event where we lost the downtown, but it's always a concern."
