Still Haven't Done Your Taxes? You're Not Alone
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two weeks from today, those tax returns are due. If you've waited to file, you're not alone.
"In the last two weeks of the session we're expecting about 40 percent of filers to submit their returns," said Carrie Resch of the Twin Cities office of the IRS.
Resch said taxpayers tend to make more mistakes on their returns when the deadline approaches, so her advice is to use tax software.
Minnesota has one of the highest rates of electronic filers at 85 percent. The national rate is 77 percent.
New this year is an expansion of the program to help struggling taxpayers.
People who've been unemployed for 30 days or longer can avoid failure-to-pay penalties for six months.
There's information at the Internal Revenue Service web site.
The deadline this year is April 17.
