MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Saying it will benefit competition, the Minnesota State High School League voted Thursday to add a seventh class to high school football.
The class, which will be known as 6A, will be made up of the 32 high schools in Minnesota with the highest enrollment. As it stands now, Minnesota high school football has nine-man through 5A.

Officials rebuked claims that they were creating another class to give more schools the chance at glory.
"Some people are going to say that seven classes is about allowing more schools to win state championships. It's really not about that," said MSHSL Associate Director Kevin Merkle. "It's really about creating more competitive balance because of the differences in football and the sizes of schools."
Class 6A will be added for the 2012 high school football season.
