Standoff At Roseville Hotel Leads To Evacuation
ROSEVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) -- About 100 guests staying at the Roseville Residence Inn were evacuated Sunday morning, while SWAT team members attempted to contact a suicidal man who barricaded himself in his room.
Police were called to the scene late Saturday night, after receiving a call that a 34-year-old St. Paul man was threatening suicide at a local hotel.
Officers began searching area hotels and eventually located the man at the Residence Inn on 2985 Centre Pointe Dr. Police say the man had attempted suicide earlier in the week, had a military background and was possibly in possession of weapons. Officers say the man was also said to be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Officers made contact with the man, who immediately fought with police. The man then retreated to his hotel room and barricaded the door. One officer was injured in the struggle.
The East Metro and Ramsey County SWAT team was brought in after negotiations for the man's peaceful surrender were unsuccessful.
Police evacuated 50 hotel rooms to the hotel's breakfast lounge and on to Metro Transit buses.
The standoff successfully ended around 2 a.m., after the man peacefully surrendered to authorities. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds and excessive alcohol consumption.
The officer injured in the initial confrontation was also taken to a hospital for treatment of a minor arm injury.
The case is currently being investigated.
