St. Paul Police: Suspect Arrested In 4-Year-Old Boy Hit & Run
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – A St. Paul man is in custody on Sunday after leaving the scene of an accident in which he struck a 4-year-old boy with his motorcycle.
According to St. Paul Police, 25-year-old Ernest Travis Jonas was arrested without incident in a hotel room in Shakopee, about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
This arrest happened about 24 hours after police asked for the public's help in finding the man suspected of hitting 4-year-old Tyrell Baymon on the 300 block of LaFond Avenue near Western Avenue.
Tyrell was holding his mother's hand at the time, as they were about to enter a vehicle to go to Como Park to celebrate his birthday.
Witnesses said Jonas was traveling up to 60 miles per hour while popping wheelies before he struck Tyrell.
Community members responded to the call for help by reporting tips that led investigators to Jonas.
On Saturday, doctors performed emergency surgery on Tyrell for a fractured skull and broken ribs.
He is currently recovering at Gillette Children's Hospital.
Tyrell's mother, Marcia Scroggins, made a statement to the media on Sunday evening.
"Thank you to everyone who has been praying for my son, and to the police who have been working on this case," said Scroggins.
A case will most likely be presented to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office in the coming days for consideration of criminal charges.
