St. Paul Police Identify Man Shot Dead By Officer
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- St. Paul Police have identified the person who was killed in an officer-involved shooting last week.
Police said that 27-year-old Guillermo Culajay Canas of St. Paul was killed in an incident near Plato Boulevard and Wabasha Street, just outside of downtown St. Paul on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Officers responded to a 911 caller who said that a bloodied man was breaking windows with a pipe and smashing a school bus. Smith says when approached by officers, the man hurled rocks at them the size of baseballs.
An officer told him to get on the ground, and he did not. The man then punched one officer and then charged directly toward the other one, which is when police opened fire.
"This wasn't just...somebody that was just walking down the street throwing pebbles or rocks. This was someone who was very aggressive. I don't know why at this point. He had our citizens very afraid. We were very lucky so citizens were not harmed as well," St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith said last week.
The two officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard.
