St. Croix Bridge Legislation Signed Into Law
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCCO) -- President Barack Obama signed the St. Croix bridge project into law, the White House announced Wednesday.
The "St. Croix River Crossing Project Authorization Act" was drafted by Sen. Amy Klobuchar and was cosponsored by Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Al Franken, (D-MN) and Ron Johnson (R-WI). It was also sponsored by U.S. Representatives Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Ron Kind (D-WI), Chip Cravaack (R-MN) and Sean Duffy (R-WI).
The $700 million project will replace the aging Stillwater lift bridge with a four-lane highway connecting Oak Park Heights and St. Joseph, Wis.
"After 30 years of debate and delay, we finally got it done," said Klobuchar. "This is a victory for the residents and businesses along the St. Croix River Valley who have waited long enough for a safe, new bridge."
The legislation was also supported by both Minnesota and Wisconsin governors.
