Spring Training Day 2: Position Players Take The Field
FORT MYERS, Fla. (WCCO) – The past, present and future of the Minnesota Twins were all on display at a practice field in Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday as Spring Training continued.
Miguel Sano, a 21-year-old third baseman, is widely considered one of the top prospects in baseball. He missed all of last season, which would've been spent in the minor leagues, recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery. He has the physical look of an NFL linebacker.
At 39 years old, Torii Hunter is back with his original team and brimming with the optimism that made him a fan favorite years ago. He's also doing his part to be a leader and set a tone for the team's younger players.
"Nah, they set an example for me. These young guys can play man," Hunter said. "We've got great athletes on this team and they're just keeping me young, that's all. So I'm just having fun and we're just having fun trying to get in shape right now.
The Twins first full day of workouts for the entire team is Friday. Second baseman Brian Dozier is coming off a solid season and is delighted to soak in everything his hall of fame manager Paul Molitor has to offer.
"We're all excited. I think he kind of manages the same way he played," Dozier said. "He's very aggressive and very detail-oriented and stuff. We've already witnessed that with meetings and going over things, and he demands that we get down here, work hard and get ready for the season."
