Spirit Mountain, Skating Rink Closed Due To Cold
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Extremely cold weather forced the closure of Duluth's Spirit Mountain ski area on Sunday and prompted wind chill warnings and advisories throughout the state.
Duluth's Bayfront skating rink was also closed Sunday due to the cold. Spirit Mountain ski area planned to reopen Monday with limited hours.
After an unseasonably warm Saturday, temperatures around the state plummeted to below zero on Sunday as arctic air moved in. The deep freeze was expected to stick around for a couple days, with parts of the state under a wind chill advisory through Monday morning. The National Weather Service said wind chill values of 25 to 34 below zero were expected in the Twin Cities metro area.
Northern Minnesota was under a wind chill warning on Sunday morning, with some areas seeing wind chills ranging from negative 30 to nearly negative 50 degrees.
The National Weather Service said the coldest wind chill was recorded at the Morris Airport, where the wind chill factor was 47 degrees below zero. Starbuck and Clara City weren't far off, with wind chills of negative 45 and negative 44 respectively.
