Span Helping Willingham Get Comfy In RF
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins signed Josh Willingham to do two things — hit home runs and play right field.
The homers shouldn't be an issue. He hit 29 last season with Oakland and has plenty of power to reach the seats in spacious Target Field.
The transition to right field will be a little trickier. Willingham has primarily played left field for his entire career, but Ben Revere is penciled in as the left fielder right now.
Willingham will be leaning on center fielder Denard Span, who has played all three positions, to help him make the move.
Manager Ron Gardenhire says he plans to play Span and Willingham together in the outfield as often as possible in spring training to give them time to get on the same page.
