Snow Snarls Traffic Just In Time For Thanksgiving Travel
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Winter Storm advisory was issued for southern Minnesota Wednesday, one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The National Weather Service said the heaviest snow was expectd south of the Twin Cities metro area, near Mankato, St. Peter, Faribault, Waseca and Owatonna.
Earlier, WCCO drove south toward Mankato, where some spots saw up to seven inches.
Along the way, several cars that had spun around and were completely facing the wrong way.
Mother Nature decided to make the busiest travel day of the year even busier.
Forty-one million people are hitting the roads this Thanksgiving – the most in seven years.
But the roads in southern Minnesota are making it harder to get home for holiday.
MnDOT has been out since midnight and pre-treated roads Monday.
"A lot people are driving really fast and I was slipping all over the road," one driver said.
But drivers traveling Wednesday morning, including us, still had to take it slow.
"I just put new tires on my truck too and it's still really slippery out," the same driver said.
"I do have it in four wheel drive but that doesn't stop it from wanting to drift into the ditches," another driver said.
For Minnesotans, this is nothing new.
But for those visiting from warmer states it's a different story.
To make it to your Thanksgiving safely, people we talked to had a few quick reminders.
"Plan twice the amount of time as you normally would to get somewhere," one driver offered.
"Slow down, be cautious, don't be in a rush, and be aware of the roads," another driver reminded.
