Since May 1, Mpls Has 3X More Rain Than Seattle
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After a miserable winter, you'd think Mother Nature would cut us a break.
Think again.
The 6 1/2 inches of rain since May 1 is three times what Seattle, Wash., has experienced.
And there's been at least a trace of rain in 28 of the past 37 days.
It sure hasn't felt like summer. Just ask Outward Bounds canoe instructors.
When June rolls around, it's rescue training time.
"Last year, it was warm and sunny," Derek Gavelis said. "It was 75 degrees, and it was perfect. And today? It's 60 degrees and miserable."
But their work must go on in water that hovers in the mid 40s.
Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer said this kind of a pattern is nowhere near typical for Minnesota.
"When you think about our average now, it's crept up to 76," he said. "That would just be an average run-of-the-mill day. We've only had 14 days so far this year where it's been 75 or warmer."
And those days made up only one weekend. But why?
"The jet stream has been in a position that's buckling west of us and keeping us in that cool pool of air, also keeping the clouds present," he said.
The good news is there is a shot of cracking 80 degrees next week.
