Sheriff: Gun Goes Off In Struggle Between Officer, Driver
BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (WCCO) – One man is in jail after allegedly assaulting a Brooklyn Park police officer during an overnight arrest.
Officials in Hennepin County say the incident occurred just after midnight following a complaint of loud music coming from a car in the 9600 block of Scott Lane North.
The responding officer saw the driver, realized that person had multiple warrants and tried to make an arrest.
According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, which is now taking the lead on this investigation, the driver assaulted the officer as he was trying to make an arrest.
At some point, the officer's gun was fired, but authorities have not said who fired the weapon.
Neither the driver nor the officer was shot.
Several neighbors in the area witnessed the struggle.
"I heard, 'He's going for my gun,'" said neighbor Randi Roller. "And I was like, 'Oh my gosh, it's the cop that's in trouble here.'"
Witnesses said the struggle went on for quite a while and that the officer involved was seen on the ground before being taken away in an ambulance.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says both the officer and the driver went to the hospital for an evaluation, but they have not given any details on any possible injuries.
The driver was eventually released from the hospital and now faces charges of assaulting an officer.
Officials have not release any names in connection to the incident.
