Sheriff: Falling Tree Hits Truck In Winona County, Killing Driver
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 66-year-old Winona man died Sunday night after a tree fell on his car while he was driving during storms in southeastern Minnesota, according to the Winona County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities responded to the incident at about 9:36 p.m. Sunday in the area of Highway 61 and Highway 129. The driver had turned off Highway 61 and was headed southbound onto Highway 129 up a hill when a large tree fell and hit the cab of his 1994 Chevy truck.
The driver, identified as Raymond Joseph Bronk of rural Winona, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Goodview Police and Fire Departments and the Winona County Sheriff's Office were the first agencies on the scene.
Authorities said they believe the soil had softened and eroded, causing the roots of the tree to give way and it toppled.
