Service Dogs Can Also Assist Diabetics
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Service dogs can do a lot of things -- including alerting diabetics when their blood sugar is low.
Dog trainers from North America and Europe are in the Twin Cities to learn about dogs like Grace.
"Grace helps me by alerting me to my low blood sugars," Shelly Hiemer said of Can Do Canines. "She can also retrieve emergency snacks for me, as well as she can get someone else in the house, or get an emergency phone if I need it."
Can Do Canines said diabetes alert dogs can smell a change in a person's breath when their blood sugar is low. About 40 service dog trainers are attending the seminar.
