Schools Change The Way They Do Morning Announcements
MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- Last week nearly a million Minnesota young people went back to school.
This week we're going back to school. From new ways to learn to a new kind of lunchroom, we're sharing what we learned.
We're taking you inside Scenic Heights Elementary School, where some fifth graders taught us how they start each day with the morning announcements. Inside room 117-B, at the back of the Scenic Heights Elementary school library, KRTS is on the air.
KRTS stands for "Kids Run the Show," and they do. From the director to the cameras to the teleprompter being a part of KRTS is a rite of passage for fifth graders. The kids write the news stories, learning how to overcome their nerves on camera, and how to keep going when they make a mistake.
It's a good lesson for broadcasters of all ages. The kids invited Jamie, Natalie and me to take a shot at it. Many schools have changed to this format to do their morning announcements.
Thanks to Melinda Barry and Cindy Olson, they're the media specialists who run KRTS at Scenic Heights.
