School District To Bid Bon Voyage To Spring Break
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- They'll be no more week-long spring trips to Disneyworld, Cancun or Daytona Beach for some Minnesota students.
The Sartell-St. Stephen School District is doing away with spring break.
Instead of a week off, the district will have more extended weekends.
This year's week-long spring break, starting on March 25, is still scheduled.
Next year though, students and parents will get three extended weekends instead -- one in February, one in March and one in April.
The Sartell-St. Stephen School District isn't the first in Minnesota to do away with the traditional spring break. The Monticello School District decided in March 2011 to abandon the 2012 spring break.
WCCO talked with Monticello School Superintendent Jim Johnson last year and he said that studies have shown that older students tend to disengage from learning late in the year. He believed it is more important to end the year in May than to take a break in March.
