Salvation Army Kicks Off 2012 Red Kettle Campaign

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - The 2012 bell ringing season started Saturday at the Twin Cities Salvation Army's 'Rock the Red Kettle" kickoff event at Cub Foods on 5937 Nicollet Ave. in south Minneapolis.

Annette Bauer is a spokesperson for the Salvation Army in the Twin Cities. She said following a 7:50 a.m. ceremony, 108 "Rock Star" volunteers and their friends attempted to raise a record-setting $108,000 by bell ringing at 108 kettles for 10 hours and 8 minutes.

The goal is to raise $9.8 million.

Bauer explains all the ways in which the money helps.

"In the Twin Cities metro area, that's our ten county metro area, last year we served 200,000 people. Every single night 900 people depend on us for a place to sleep. We serve 2,100 hot meals every single day," Bauer said.

To sign up to be a "bell ringer" all you have to do go online at salvationarmynorth.org.
