Rivalry Splits Couple For Lambeau Rematch
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WCCO) – Russ Radant met DeEtte in Colorado Springs, and married her in 1991. But two days out of every year, the couple's marital bliss is met with long-standing rivalry.
Russ says he was "born and bred" in Wisconsin, where fans "live and breathe" the Packers.
DeEtte is from Minnesota, and says she just can't let go of being a Vikings fans.
In some areas of their marriage, the Radants just can't find a compromise.
"If [the football rivalry] would have came out while we were dating, it might not be 20 some years together," Russ said.
To say DeEtte is outnumbered in her allegiance is an understatement. Not only is she living in Packer country, even her children root for green and gold.
"He brainwashed them somehow to be Packer fans, she said.
Clayton Radant, one of the couple's kids, said he didn't really have a choice – the Packers made rooting for them pretty appealing.
He said whenever the family went to Packer outings, the team gifted the fans with so much "garb, gifts and gadgets" and he just couldn't resist cheering for them.
The pressure even had a die-hard Viking fan considering the unthinkable. DeEtte contemplated donning the green and gold this season.
"When it came down to it, I'm true to the Vikings," she said. "Wasn't going to happen."
True fans know a thing or two about loyalty, even if it means the border battle plays out in the home.
Both Russ and DeEtte will be at the big game at Lambeau Field on Saturday. However, they'll be sitting on opposite ends of the field. DeEtte will be sitting in the Vikings section. Her husband will be with the rest of the Packers fans.
