Richfield School Wins National Recipe Contest
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Twin Cities school has come out on top of a national recipe contest after 10 months of competition.
The students at South Education Center Alternative School in Richfield, Minn. are the winners of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Recipes for Healthy Kids" contest.
It is a national competition to promote healthy eating among children.
The recipe they developed -- along with the Parasole Restaurant group's head chef -- was for "Porcupine Sliders," an extra lean turkey burger topped with brown rice and spinach.
The sliders advanced to the finals in Dallas after winning first place in the whole grains category.
At the American Culinary Federation National Convention on Monday, the recipe went up against a vegetable bake from Joshua Cowell School in Manteca, Calif., and a Tuscan smoked turkey and bean soup from Ira B. Jones Elementary School in Asheville, N.C. But, it was the "Porcupine Sliders" that took home the grand prize.
The school gets $3,000 and team members will get a chance to prepare their recipe alongside the White House chefs. Check out the recipe below.
