Report: Former Gophers Football Player Arrested
DENVER, Colo. (WCCO) -- An NFL player who previously played football for the Golden Gophers has reportedly been arrested after being caught with a high-power assault-type firearm.
According to KCNC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver, Broncos running back Laurence Maroney was taken into custody Monday night in St. Louis.
Police in that city, Maroney's hometown, said the 25-year-old was arrested on drug and weapons charges.
KCNC reported Maroney was arrested after a vehicle allegedly involved in a high-speed chase was pulled over. Maroney's publicist said he was not with the car, but just happened to be behind the car by pure coincidence.
Maroney played for the University of Minnesota in the early 2000s. He was noted for rushing for 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons there.
There has been no comment from the Denver Broncos organization. He was traded to Denver after playing for the New England Patriots.
