Report: Domestic Violence Homicides Claimed 34 Lives In 2015
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- New data sheds light on the growing number of people who have died as a result of domestic violence.
On Tuesday, the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women released its 2015 Femicide Report, showing that last year 34 people died as a result of domestic violence. That number includes three men who were killed by their current or former partner.
For the past 27 years, the number of domestic violence homicides has remained in the double digits.
Last year's number is up from 23 people killed in 2014. However, it's down from the number of people killed in 2013, which was 37.
Becky Smith, who is with the coalition, says the number one reason victims stay in domestic violence situations is because they don't have the financial resources to leave.
A reception and memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul College Club to remember victims of domestic violence. It's open to the public.
