Rep. Bachmann Withdraws Dual Swiss Citizenship
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) –- Saying she wanted to make her pride in America "perfectly clear," Rep. Michele Bachmann sent a letter withdrawing her citizenship from Switzerland.
Earlier this week, reports noted that Bachmann had gained dual citizenship after marrying her husband, Marcus. He recently registered with the Swiss government in March, reports said. Both his parents were born in Switzerland.
Rep. Bachmann's family's three youngest children were also Swiss citizens, according to reports.
On Thursday, Bachmann announced she would be withdrawing from her dual citizenship, "which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978."
She continued, in a press release: "I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known."
Bachmann represents Minnesota's 6th Congressional District and plans to seek re-election following her unsuccessful run for the Republican presidential nomination.
