Red Wing Mayor To Step Down Over Frac Sand Controversy
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The mayor of Red Wing says he will step down from that over his second job as a frac sand lobbyist due to a conflict of interest.
Dennis Egan confirmed over the weekend to officials with the Red Wing City Council that he will resign on April 1. He originally said he could legally continue as mayor while working as the executive eirector of the Minnesota Industrial Sand Council.
The Red Wing City Council is expected to discuss a special election on Monday to find a new mayor. Red Wing is in frac sand territory. Demand for silica sand is high because it's used in hydraulic "fracking" that produces oil and gas.
