Red Rise Slows, But Already Past '10 Crest
FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- The Red River has climbed past last year's crest at Fargo and is still rising, but city officials there and in neighboring Moorhead are putting the finishing touches on their preparation.
The Red is nearing 38 feet, on its way to a crest estimated to reach 39 or 40 feet Sunday. That estimate was down slightly and would keep the river below the 2009 record of 40.84 feet.
National Guard members have begun patrolling dikes around the cities, watching for any weak spots. Sandbag work is largely done in Fargo and was expected to wrap up Friday in Moorhead.
