Ramsey County To Help Vets In Criminal Trouble
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Ramsey County is taking steps to make sure that military veterans who find themselves in criminal trouble can get the help they need -- and get their lives back on track.
Ramsey County Attorney John Choi says the county's new Veterans Justice Initiative will allow authorities to address unique issues that plague some veterans who end up in the criminal justice system.
County officials say some veterans suffer collateral consequences from serving in the military, including post-traumatic stress disorder, or drug abuse and alcoholism. Sometimes, these stressors lead to criminal behavior.
Choi says the initiative will focus on public safety and accountability, and will get veterans resources. Other courts nationwide, including Hennepin County, have veterans' courts that provide vets with services in hopes of preventing them from reoffending.
