Radio Voice Of Twins To Broadcast Final Game

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- The radio voice of the Minnesota Twins stepped back from the microphone Wednesday evening, ending a 25-year run.

John Gordon has called Twins games for listeners throughout the Upper Midwest since his first year with the team in 1987, when Minnesota won the first of two championships. Wednesday night's game, which ended in a Twins' 1-0 win, was his last.

Gordon says after 25 years with the Twins and 43 years in professional baseball, that's enough balls and strikes. Gordon is ready to see what's outside the circle of baseball and spend more time with his family, golf and travel.

The Detroit native began his broadcasting career in 1965 after graduating from Indiana University and called games for the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees among other teams before coming to Minnesota.

At Monday night's season finale, Twins fans said they will miss his "touch em all" calls that he would do whenever a Twins player hit a home run.

"His voice was beautiful and it was robust. And he did a very nice job, especially with 'touch em all' Kirby Puckett during Puckett's home run in Game 6 of the '91 World Series," said Twins fan Dan Peterson.

"I said I wanted to come tonight because he was retiring. It's going to be big shoes to fill for somebody," said Twins fan Jeff Hoppe.

During a pre-game ceremony the Twins officially named the home radio booth the "John Gordon Broadcast Booth."
