Protecting Yourself From Scams On Cyber Monday
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The stores are busy this weekend -- but one in three people still plan to do part of their holiday shopping online this year. But you then run the risk of getting scammed.
While you shop online, Cyber-Scrooges are working overtime. They have now invaded your mobile, email and Internet, looking for any opportunity to steal.
Security technology company, McAfee, has put together a list of the 12 scams of Christmas to warm consumers.
It highlights how criminals are now going after our ever-smaller devices like iPads and smart phones.
Senior director of security and privacy for Comcast, Jay Opperman, has some tips to keep your money safe.
"The same shopping tips that we offer for PC use are the same kind of tips that we suggest people follow as well when they're now shopping on portable devices," he said.
Opperman said following a few simple rules can protect you from the 12 scams of the season.
"Never use a debit card online. If you do happen to get the number stolen to your debit account, then they have access to your funds in your bank and that puts all of your funds at personal risk," he said.
Opperman said always use a dedicated credit card when ordering on line. If there is a fraudulent charge, most credit card companies will reverse it.
He also said people should use a different email account to avoid companies sharing your information with others.
Most importantly, never save your credit card information on a website.
Opperman said if you do use technology when shopping make sure before you hit enter you see HTTPS in the browser bar, it assures connection to a secure, encrypted site.
