Teen Charged With Murder For 16-Year-Old GF's Death
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After making a second request for an extension, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office charged a 17-year-old boy with murder in the death of his 16-year-old girlfriend.
Anthony Joseph Mitchell, of Maplewood, was charged with one count each of second-degree intentional murder and second-degree unintentional murder for the stabbing death of Anna Hurd on Feb. 23.
Prosecutors are also moving to try Mitchell as an adult.
"This tragic case brings so much pain to the victim's family as well as the community at large," said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi in a press release. "Our hearts go out to those who survive her."
The Ramsey County Attorney's Office filed a second request for a 24-hour extension earlier on Tuesday. The charges were then filed around 4:22 p.m.
Police found the Hurd's body, of North St. Paul, around 4:29 a.m. in the area of McKnight Road and Ripley Avenue -- just blocks away from the home of Hurd's father. They were responding to a call about a girl who was found beaten and unresponsive.
The teen's death was a homicide, resulting from several stab wounds, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Police investigation revealed Mitchell had gone for a walk with Hurd but returned home alone around 2 a.m., telling his mother that Hurd walked to a friend's house instead.
He told police he went looking for her and returned a short time later in hysterics with blood on his hands. Mitchell was also seen at a party the night before, playing with a knife.
A witness told police Hurd planned on ending her relationship with Mitchell.
Hurd played volleyball and basketball for North St. Paul High School. She was set to leave Minnesota soon. She planned on going to Texas to live with her mom.
Mitchell will make his first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
