BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) -- Demolition of most of Brookdale Center could begin soon.
The Brooklyn Center City Council is expected to give approval as early as May 9 for a major retail development. Demolition would begin shortly after that. The new complex will be called Shingle Creek Crossing.
"The days of a typical mall are pretty much over. They're very expensive to maintain, to heat and keep in place," said Brooklyn Center Mayor Tim Willson.

He said the new development will look more like a Main Street than a traditional mall.
"So it's more of individual sites within a site," Willson said.
Gatlin Development Company is behind the proposal and is seeking anchor stores.
"And we're very hopeful that the anchors will come in. We know there's one, for sure -- Wal-Mart," he said.
