Gov. Dayton Declares Thursday 'Prince Tribute Day'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith are honoring the music legend Prince by declaring Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016 as "Prince Tribute Day."
The day is in conjunction with the planned tribute concert feature Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and many others at Xcel Energy Center.
"Prince and his phenomenal talents led an era of music and showcased Minnesota to the world," Dayton said. "Today, we honor a magnificent artist, celebrate his great legacy, and thank him for always making Minnesota his home."
In the same vein, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges proclaimed Thursday "Prince Day" in the city.
"WHEREAS, Prince's enduring love of his hometown will forever be matched by our enduring love for him," the proclamation read, along with 11 other points.
Prince died at Paisley Park, his Twin Cities recording studio, on April 21. His death sparked worldwide mourning and tributes, including pilgrimages to Chanhassen.
"Prince was a global star, but we feel his loss personally here at home," Lt. Governor Tina Smith said. "Through his playful, humorous, original, and prodigious talent he defined the 'Minneapolis Sound,' and left an indelible mark on music and culture not only in Minnesota, but everywhere."
