Prep Blog: Week 7 Top Performances
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It's definitely starting to feel more like fall around Minnesota, and it's definitely feeling more like football weather as teams hit their fields on game day.
Week 7 brought us plenty of competitive match-ups and a lot of what I would call "unlikely winners." Rogers got out to a 14-0 lead against Elk River, only to have the Elks score 17 unanswered points to pull out an upset of the No. 4-ranked team in Class 4A. In a battle of Classic Suburban rivals, Mahtomedi knocked off previously unbeaten South St. Paul to force a tie for second in the conference race.
Week 7 also brought plenty of special individual performances, but we can only highlight four. Here's who had big games last Friday:
St. Croix Lutheran RB Leads Team To Win
It would be an understatement to say Wesley Tucker had a big night as St. Croix Lutheran beat St. Anthony 54-14 Friday night in the Tri-Metro Conference. St. Anthony had no answer on defense for Tucker, who had 21 carries for 356 yards and four touchdowns for the Crusaders in the victory. St. Croix Lutheran is 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. They face Brooklyn Center Wednesday night and will try to cap an undefeated regular season.
Holy Angels QB Stars In Win At Northfield
Northfield thought it had a chance to pull a home upset of Holy Angels Friday night, but the Stars had other ideas. Junior QB Sam Keis led the way with 14 carries for 135 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for 164 yards and a touchdown as the Stars rallied to a 25-7 win over the Raiders. Holy Angels, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, hosts Chaska to end the regular season on Wednesday. The Stars would need that Northfield team they just beat to upset Shakopee to claim a share of the Missota Conference title.
Holy Family Senior Lights Fire Under The Fire
Senior quarterback/defensive back Michael Roane was a one-man wrecking crew as Holy Family Catholic edged Waseca 21-20 in overtime Friday night. Roane scored the game-tying touchdown in overtime after Waseca scored and missed on a two-point conversion. He then kicked the game-winning extra point, and also had two of the Fire's three blocked punts on the night. Holy Family, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, hosts Duluth Denfeld Wednesday night to end the regular season.
Bauer Has Big Night For Eagan In Victory
After getting off to an 0-3 start, the Eagan Wildcats have won three out of their last four games and quarterback Drew Bauer has a lot to do with it. Bauer threw for 147 yards and a touchdown and added 97 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as the Wildcats shut out Burnsville 31-0 in South Suburban Conference play. Eagan (3-4) travels to Rosemount Wednesday night to complete its conference schedule.
Extras: Lakeville North quarterback Troy Heid's performance Friday night in a Panthers' victory couldn't go without being mentioned. Lakeville North beat Bloomington Kennedy, and it felt like Heid had a hand in almost every point that was scored. Heid finished with 263 yards and four touchdowns, ran for another score and kicked three extra points in the win. Heid has advanced quickly this year to establish himself as one of the top and most versatile quarterbacks in the state.
