Prep Blog: Week 6 Top Performances
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It was a big Week 6 in high school football around the state. There were many huge match-ups, including several featuring undefeated teams facing each other.
With just two weeks left in the regular season, and about five days between games with the MEA week coming up, there's not much time left for any big fixes. Conference titles are now at stake as well as high seeding for the playoffs, because in the postseason every team wants that home field advantage.
There were numerous big performances last week, but we can only choose four of them. Here they are in no particular order:
Converted LB Runs All Over Buffalo
Elk River's Moses Saygbe was used to playing on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker, but this year he is taking full advantage of a switch to running back. Saygbe ran for 173 yards and three touchdowns as the Elks beat Buffalo 35-22 in Mississippi 8 Conference play. The Elks are second in the conference standings behind Rogers, and Saygbe has a lot to do with it. He's run for 1,011 yards so far this year and is averaging more than nine yards per carry. Elk River hosts Rogers this week.
Pellegrene Has Big Night For Providence In Victory
Sam Pellegrene was literally all over the field for Providence Academy in its 37-13 victory over Minnehaha Academy on Friday in the Tri-Metro Conference. Pellegrene was a force running the ball with 223 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. But he might have made a bigger impact on defense with three interceptions and six tackles. Providence's defense in total forced 11 turnovers in the win, including eight interceptions. Providence Academy is one game behind DeLaSalle for the league lead on the West side of the Tri-Metro with two games to go. Providence hosts Breck in another big game on Friday.
Burnsville QB Shines In Comeback Win Over Eastview
Dan Motl sensed it was time to get his team going, and it was just the right time as he led Burnsville to a 36-29 comeback victory over Eastview in the South Suburban Conference Friday night. The Blaze scored 21 fourth quarter points in the win, which Motl had a hand in all of. He threw a 43-yard touchdown pass, ran for two more scores and kicked all three extra points. It gave the Blaze their second win of the season with two tough games left against Eagan and Lakeville South.
Anoka RBs Run Tornadoes To Victory
D.J. Johnson and Josh Werness were simply unstoppable as Anoka ran past Coon Rapids in a 42-28 win in the Northwest Suburban Conference Friday night. Johnson scored on a 62-yard first quarter run to get the Tornadoes going. He finished with 162 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Werness finished with 131 yards on the ground and a score as Anoka improved to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play with two weeks left. The Tornadoes face Armstrong and Champlin Park in their last two games, while Osseo, who is one game behind them, has Champlin Park and Blaine in its last two games.
Other notable performances: Here are some other big performances worthy of a note that we couldn't include in our top four. Delano quarterback Cody Mathisen had two touchdown runs and passed for three touchdowns as the Tigers beat Waconia in the Wright County Conference. Chanhassen senior Maverick Edmunds ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns as the Storm beat rival Chaska 57-8 in Missota Conference play. Eagle Valley running back Jacob Schauer also now has two stories to tell his future kids and grandkids when he gets old. He broke his own record Friday night with 313 rushing yards and three touchdowns as Eagle Valley beat Ashby 42-20. Schauer now has almost 1,500 rushing yards this season.
