Prep Blog: Week 2 Top Performances
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There were a lot of big games with late season implications last week as most teams around the state played in just their second game.
Most coaches say between the first and second game is where teams have the greatest chance to show significant improvement. It's after week two that most programs know where they're headed for the rest of the fall season. While most teams take a night to celebrate their wins, it's short-lived as each game every week gets bigger than the previous match-up.
There were a lot of big performances Friday night, but we can only highlight four. Here's our best of the best from last week's action.
Washburn Breaks In New Turf With Win
New Fieldturf at Washburn High School in Minneapolis is making the Millers even faster. Washburn debuted its new field Friday night, coasting to a 33-6 win over South in Minneapolis City Conference action. Jeffrey Jones ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown in just one half of action in his first game of the season, and Jamison Whiting caught a 40-yard touchdown pass on the Millers' first offensive play. Washburn travels to Waseca in non-conference play this week.
Hutchinson Dominates In Rivalry Game Win
Hutchinson became the early favorite in the Wright County Conference after a convincing 35-13 win over rival Glencoe-Silver Lake Friday night. The Tigers piled up more than 400 yards of total offense and got three scores from quarterback McKinley Anderson in the victory. The Tigers travel to Orono this week to continue conference play. The Wright County Conference is loaded this year with half of the 11 teams ranked in the top 10 of either Class 3A or 4A.
Spring Lake Park Shuts Out Benilde
Benilde-St. Margaret's scored 49 points in its season opening win, but the Red Knights were shut out by a stifling Spring Lake Park defense as the Panthers beat Benilde 16-0 Friday night in North Suburban Conference play. It was a match-up of two top 10 teams that shapes the conference outlook the rest of the fall. The Panthers collected 16 tackles for a loss and six sacks while giving up less than 200 total yards. Jacob Ojile led the charge with 4.5 sacks. Spring Lake Park, ranked No. 4 in 5A, travels to St. Louis Park (1-1) this week.
QB Leads Mounds View Past Cretin
In a huge game with Suburban East Conference implications, Mounds View edged Cretin-Derham Hall 17-16 Friday night with the help of a missed extra point by the Raiders late in the fourth quarter. It's the first regular season win for the Mustangs over Cretin since Mounds View joined the Suburban East Conference. T.J. Horn scored on a short touchdown run and Mitch Fredrickson threw a 61-yard touchdown pass in the win. The Mustangs, ranked No. 5 in 6A, travel to East Ridge this week.
Quick Hits:
Park Center had a very welcomed celebration Friday night after beating St. Francis 19-6. It was their first win since October 2010 and it snapped a 14-game losing streak. Rickey Foggie, in his second season as the Pirates' head coach, earned his first victory.
Dwight Lundeen is a legend when it comes to high school football in Becker. He earned one of his top accomplishments yet as Bulldogs' coach in Week 1 as Becker beat Milaca 61-6 to open the season. It also marked his 300th career victory as the program's head coach.
