Police Still Investigating Coon Rapids Hit-And-Run
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities in Coon Rapids are still investigating a hit-and-run accident last week now has a 9-year-old boy in serious condition at the hospital.
Paul Sommer with the Anoka County Sheriff's Department said his office has followed up on a number of leads that were generated since the incident. One of them came from a body shop in downtown Minneapolis, where a customer had a black 1996 Chevy Z-71 that looked similar to the vehicle in the crash. There was also a specific area of the truck that the owner requested be repaired.
Amir Taylor was hit near the intersection of 11th Avenue and Kumquat Street in Coon Rapids last Wednesday, and the driver fled the scene.
Authorities had the vehicle impounded last Friday and served a search warrant on the vehicle's owner, Sommer said. Authorities say it could take several weeks before results from that warrant amount to anything.
Sommer said it is too early in the investigation of the forensic evidence with the truck to say without a doubt it's the vehicle that hit the boy. The owner of the truck is denying any involvement in the accident.
Taylor is still at North Memorial Hospital. Authorities said he is breathing on his own, but is still sedated. He has been updated from critical to serious condition.
