Police: St. Paul Man Dies After Apparent Deer Stand Fall
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 72-year-old hunter died in Beltrami County Saturday after an apparent fall from a deer stand, police said.
A hunting party found its fellow member, Gene Berthiaume, of St. Paul, under his deer stand, police said.
First responders found Berthiaume in the woods off Pioneer Road Northeast in Woodrow Township. First responders and Blackduck emergency workers administered first aid, but Berthiaume died at the scene, police said.
A Blackduck ambulance drove Berthiaume to Bemidji, where police conducted an investigation to determine the cause and manner of death.
Berthiaume's family has been told of his death, and the incident is still under investigation, police said.
This incident marks the second death authorities have reported on the gun deer hunting opener. A Maple Grove man also died after falling from a deer stand.
