Police Seek Suspects In South Minneapolis Triple Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police are trying to find the people who shot three men who were sitting inside a car in south Minneapolis Sunday night.
Two of them were killed. The third man was hospitalized overnight. It happened in the Seward neighborhood near East Franklin Avenue and 22nd Avenue South.
Officers were called to a parking lot of an apartment complex just before 8 p.m.
The Minneapolis Police Department says no arrests have been made in this double murder, but officers spent much of Sunday night and Monday talking with witnesses.
Neighbors heard gunshots right outside of the Franklin Housing Cooperative building. It was there, in the parking lot, that officers found a gruesome scene inside a car.
John Elder is a public information officer for Minneapolis Police. He described what happened.
"Officers arrived and found two deceased adult males inside the vehicle," Elder said.
Community leaders have identified one of two people killed in the incident as Abdulahi Awuni. Awuni, a local spoken word artist who worked at a neighborhood recreation center, was one of the two found dead in the vehicle.
A third man in the car had gunshot wounds too, but was still alive.
"These parties are acquainted at a minimum. I don't know what happened from there. There was a conversation and persons outside the vehicle began shooting inside the vehicle, striking the three occupants," he said.
Police believe there's more than one gunman involved and say the suspects fled on foot. Officers say they are already following up on leads after speaking to people who live nearby.
"As we get through the information, we will be able to put together a description of who our suspects are, and when it becomes applicable, we will get that information out to the public," he said.
The surviving victim underwent surgery Sunday night for what's described as serious but not life-threatening injuries.
