Police Investigating Deadly Winona Bar Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- The Winona Police Department is investigating after one person was killed and another was injured in a bar shooting early Wednesday morning.
According to police, officers responded at 1:07 a.m. to a 911 call of a shooting that just occurred at EB's Corner Bar at 700 West 5th Street in Winona.
When officers arrived, they found a 27-year-old Winona man, identified as Sean Patrick O'Brien, suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg and a 53-year-old Winona man suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso area. Both were taken to a local hospital.
The 53-year-old victim was later pronounced dead. He's identified as Robert Charles Johnson.
The two men were in a larger group outside the bar when they were shot. Police say the suspected shooter drove up to the bar around closing time, spoke to people outside, then left and returned, firing shots at the group.
Police say witnesses' descriptions led them to the suspect's vehicle, located on 129 West 3rd Street, which contains apartments. While evacuating the apartments shortly before 7 a.m., authorities made contact with the suspect – a 48-year-old Winona man – and arrested him without incident.
The suspect, identified as Rickey Darnell Waiters, was taken to the Winona County Jail where he's being held on charges of second-degree homicide and second-degree assault.
The investigation is ongoing.
